A story of friendship in the Second World War
The cover shows Marie and Gabi, both six years old – the two best friends of the story. They live in Thuringia, a German region in the middle of the country. They were out to fetch milk from a nearby village when an enemy fighter plane strafed them. It was toward the end of the Second World War. Sometime later, a larger enemy plane dropped its bombs on the castle in their town. The castle was being used to store ammunition and bombs, and it exploded with a tremendous roar. Soon, American troops entered the town but were replaced three months later by the Russian army.
